Tubano

Tubanos

The Tubano is a unique percussion instrument, developed REMO, a company famous for its pioneering drumheads and one of the largest drum companies in the world. It is lightweight and easy to store and carry, which is why it is so popular with drum circle enthusiasts. It is also popular because of its weather resistance, tunable yet durable drumhead, and an attached carrying handle.  It is easy for beginners to play on and the drum makes several interesting tones.  The design of the drum follows a type found in many drum cultures--a cylindrical drum that has either one or two skin "heads", and is either played with bare hands, or with sticks.

When playing a Tubano, you will find that it sounds similar to a conga, with which it shares some similarities. Like a conga drum, it stands upright and is played on the top head with bare hands. However, unlike a conga, a tubano does not need to be attached to a stand to lift it off of the floor; as you can see in the picture above, it has sturdy rubber legs at the base, making it a popular choice with "on the go" drummers.
